European ancestry from Spanish colonization in the Philipines is much lower than people imagine; it’s only averaged around 4-5% across national studies. As with a lot of cases in history, what we’re finding is that the exchange was much more cultural than genetic.

This is really quite similar to the overstatement of Iberian and Scandinavian mix in the British Isles on average, which is also much less and usually quite a bit more distant than is held in the popular imagination.

      Very true.

sure is this low? have seen many filipino celebs and locals on movies and docs that could easily be one quarter, even half non-southeast asian, i think is a mistake to asume that all countries in east asia are full or nearly full ethnically homogeneus, Philipines has little in common with Japan and Korea for example, they have a vast history of exchange with non-asian countries

It’s not really my opinion or on me. Europeans left a small genetic mark in the Philipines. I’m not sure what else to tell you. If their celebrities look more European it’s probably because the upper castes control the media like nearly everywhere else they colonized.

It’s that low. I think its very strange when Filipinos call themselves “cousins” of Latinos when that is just not realistic. Latinos have significant amount of european blood even if they look/are very multiracial.

It would be interesting if we could find deep historical and genetic evidence of how much non-southeast asian admixture filipino people really have. This beautiful lady looks just as much mixed with white as Olivia Rodrigo. The colour and shape of her eyes, nose, and lips are quite telling.
