Douglas Engelbart was an American engineer and inventor. He was an early computer and Internet pioneer.

Douglas was the son of Gladys Charlotte Amelia and Carl Louis Engelbart. He was married to occupational therapist Ballard Fish, until her death, and then to writer and producer Karen O’Leary Engelbart, until his death. He had four children with Ballard.

Douglas’s paternal grandfather was Louis B. Engelbart (the son of Heinrich/Henrich C. “Henry” Engelbart and Rebecca/Rebecke Schumaker/Schumacher). Louis was born in Minnesota, to German parents, from Hannover.

Douglas’s paternal grandmother was Mary Louise Ernst (the daughter of Christian Ludwig “Louis” Ernst and Ernestine/Ernstina Sophie Hofheintz/Hoffhrine). Mary Louise was born in Missouri, to German parents, who were born in Spöck, Stutensee, Karlsruhe, Baden-Württemberg. Christian was the son of Christian Friedrich Ernst and Christine Katharina Hartmann.

Douglas’s maternal grandfather was Mathias “Matt” Munson (the son of Morten/Morton “Martin” Munson and Marie Anna “Mary” Johannsen). Mathias was born in Wisconsin, to Norwegian parents. Morten was born in Nordsinni, Nordre Land, Oppland.

Douglas’s maternal grandmother was Julia L. Hultgren (the daughter of Johannes “John” Andersson Hultgren and Charlotta Lovisa Andreasdotter). Julia was born in Minnesota, to Swedish parents, from Algana and Hult, respectively, both in Värmland.
