Alexandra is the daughter of Christa Maria (Nowotny), who managed a communications company, and Richard Nigel Manley, an insurance company executive. Her father was born in Shanghai, China, and was of English and Chinese ancestry. Her mother was born in Austria.

Alexandra’s paternal grandfather was William Thomas Manley (the son of John Thomas Manley and Mary Ho Li). William was born in Shanghai. John was born in Lambeth, Surrey, England. Mary was born in Guangzhou, Guangdong, China, the daughter of Awa Li.
