Shohei Ohtani is a Japanese professional baseball player. A pitcher, designated hitter, and outfielder, he plays for the Los Angeles Dodgers of Major League Baseball (MLB). He was previously with the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters and the Los Angeles Angels, and represents Samurai Japan internationally. He is the first Major League Baseball player to hit 50 home runs and steal 50 bases in a single season. He is also the first in MLB history to have 10+ home runs and 20+ stolen bases as a hitter and 100+ strikeouts and 10+ pitching appearances as a pitcher in the same season. He won the 2018 American League (AL) Rookie of the Year Award, and the 2021 AL MVP award. He is nicknamed “Shotime.”
Shohei is the son of Kayoko and Toru Ohtani, who worked at an automobile manufacturing plant. His father played in the Japanese Industrial League of baseball, and his mother was a national-level badminton player in high school. He is married to professional basketball player Mamiko Tanaka.
