Sean is the son of Isabelle and Sylvain Couturier, who was also a hockey player. He was born in Phoenix, Arizona, while his father was playing there, and was raised in Bathurst, New Brunswick, Canada.

Sean’s paternal grandfather was named Gerald Couturier.

Sean’s paternal grandmother was Denise Bergevin (the daughter of Elie Aime Bergevin and Florida Leduc).
