Richard Lugar was an American politician and soybean and tree farmer. A Republican, he served as Mayor of Indianapolis, from January 1, 1968 to January 1, 1976, and a U.S. Senator from Indiana, from January 3, 1977 to January 3, 2013.
He was a candidate for the Republican Party’s nomination for President of the United States in 1996.
Richard was the son of Bertha Isabelle (Green) and Marvin Leroy Lugar.
He was married to Charlene Smeltzer, until his death. The couple has four children.
Richard’s paternal grandfather was Riley Webster Lugar (the son of Joseph Lugar and Mary Ann Hays). Riley was born in Indiana.
