R. B. Bennett, The Viscount Bennett, was a Canadian lawyer, businessperson, philanthropist, and politician. A member of the Conservative Party, he served as the eleventh Prime Minister of Canada, from August 7, 1930 to October 23, 1935. He was a Member of Parliament for Calgary (AB), from September 21, 1911 to December 16, 1917, and for Calgary West (AB), from October 29, 1925 to January 28, 1939.
Prime Minister Bennett was the son of Henrietta (Stiles) and Henry John Bennett. He was a distant cousin of W. A. C. Bennett and his son Bill Bennett, who were Premiers of British Columbia.
Prime Minister Bennett’s paternal grandfather was Nathan Murray Bennett (the son of Benjamin Bennett and Rebecca Stevens). Nathan was born in Hopewell, Albert County, New Brunswick. Benjamin was born in Connecticut, the son of Zadock Bennett and Mercy Mary Hackett. Rebecca was the daughter of Nehemiah Stevens, from Massachusetts, and of Rebecca Anderson.
Prime Minister Bennett’s paternal grandmother was named Rachel Ann Marshall.
Prime Minister Bennett’s maternal grandfather was David Stiles (the son of Elisha Stiles and Mary Hoar). Mary was the daughter of Ebenezer Hoar, from Massachusetts, and of Catherine Downing, from Nova Scotia. Mary was the daughter of David Hoar and Abigail Hitchcock.
Prime Minister Bennett’s maternal grandmother was named Mary Ann Wright.
