Miriam Defensor Santiago was a Filipina scholar, academic, lawyer, judge, author, and stateswoman. She served as Senator of the Philippines, from June 30, 1995 to June 30, 2001, and again, from June 30, 2004 to June 30, 2016, and a Judge of the International Criminal Court, from December 12, 2012 to June 3, 2014, among other duties. She was a presidential candidate for the Philippine presidential elections in 1992, 1998, and 2016.
Her father, Benjamin Azucena Defensor, was a lawyer and trial judge. Her mother, Dimpna Palma, was a college dean. Miriam was married to Narciso Yap “Jun” Santiago, Jr., until her death, with whom she had two children.
Miriam’s paternal grandfather was named Fulgencio Defensor.
