Miguel Díaz-Canel is a Cuban politician. He has been President of Cuba, since 10 October, 2019, and First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba, since 19 April, 2021. He was previously Minister of Higher Education, from 8 May, 2009 to 21 March, 2012, First Vice President of the Council of State of Cuba, from 24 February, 2013 to 19 April, 2018, and President of the Council of Ministers of Cuba, and President of the Council of State of Cuba, both, from 19 April, 2018 to 10 October, 2019.
His father, Miguel Díaz-Canel, is a mechanical plant worker. His mother, Aida Bermúdez, is a schoolteacher.
Miguel is married to Lis Cuesta Peraza. He has two children with his former wife, dentist Marta Villanueva.
One of Miguel’s paternal great-grandfathers was named Ramón Díaz-Canel. Ramón emigrated from Castropol, Asturias, Spain.
