Michael Aris was an English historian.
His father, John Arundel Aris, was an English officer, with the British Council. His mother, Josette Marie-Émilie de Guise (Vallancourt), was French-Canadian, and also of 1/16th English and 1/16th Scottish descent. Michael had two children with Aung, including activist Alexander Aris.
He was the husband of Burmese politician Aung San Suu Kyi, to whom he was married, until his death.
Michael’s paternal grandfather was Herbert Aris (the son of John Aris and Elizabeth Whitton). Herbert was born in Weedon Lois, Northamptonshire, England. John was the son of John Aris and Mary. Elizabeth was the daughter of William Whitton and Elizabeth Wakefield.

Michael’s great-grandmother Marie-Émilie was the daughter of François de Guise and Léonore-Mélina Barbeau.
Michael’s maternal grandmother was Blanche Jeannotte (the daughter of Herménégilde Jeannotte and Emily Victoria Marie Clerk). Herménégilde was the son of Herménégilde Jeannotte and Marie-Libéré Tetreau. Emily was the daughter of George Edward Clerk and Marie Louise Elizabeth Dupuis. George’s parents, Sir George Clerk, 6th Baronet, and Maria Anne Law, were Scottish and English, respectively.
