Mario Cuomo was an American attorney and politician. A member of the Democratic Party, he served as Governor of New York, from January 1, 1983 to December 31, 1994. He was also Secretary of State of New York, from January 1, 1975 to December 31, 1978, and Lieutenant Governor of New York, from January 1, 1979 to December 31, 1982.

Mario was the son of Immaculata (Giordano/Giardano) and Andrea Cuomo. His father was born in New York, to parents from Nocera Inferiore, Salerno, Campania, Italy. His mother was from Tramonti, Salerno. His family ran Kessler’s Grocery Store in South Jamaica, Queens.

Mario was married to Matilda (Raffa) Cuomo, until his death. Matilda is an advocate for women and children. The couple had five children, including radiologist and author Margaret Cuomo; lawyer, author, and politician Andrew Cuomo, who was also Governor of New York, from January 1, 2011 to August 23, 2021; and television journalist Chris Cuomo.

Mario’s paternal grandfather was named Donato Cuomo.

Mario’s paternal grandmother was named Maria D’Elia.
