Mariano Rajoy is a Spanish politician. He served as Prime Minister of Spain, from 21 December, 2011 to 2 June, 2018. He has also been Vice President of Galicia, from 4 November, 1986 to 26 September, 1987, Minister of the Interior, from 28 February, 2001 to 10 July, 2002, Leader of the Opposition, from 17 April, 2004 to 21 December, 2011, and President of the People’s Party, from 2 October, 2004 to 21 July, 2018, among many other duties.
Prime Minister Rajoy is the son of Olga Brey López Mosquera and Mariano Rajoy Sobredo, a jurist, who was president of the Provincial Court of Pontevedra, from 20 December, 1969 to 10 January, 1986. He was partly raised in León and Vigo. He is married to Elvira Fernández Balboa, with whom he has two children.
Prime Minister Rajoy’s paternal grandfather was Enrique Rajoy Leloup (the son of Mariano Rajoy do Barro and Rosa Leloup González). Enrique was born in Santiago, and was one of the architects of the Statute of Autonomy of Galicia in 1932. Prime Minister Rajoy’s great-grandfather Mariano was the son of Manuel Rajoy and Ramona do Barro. Rosa was the daughter of Francisco Leloup and Rosa Gonzalez. Leloup is often a French surname.
Prime Minister Rajoy’s paternal grandmother was Mercedes Sobredo Brandáriz (the daughter of Salvador Sobredo Bustelo and Pilar Brandáriz Hernández).
Prime Minister Rajoy’s maternal grandfather was Manuel Brey Guerra (the son of Don Manuel María Brey Barcala and Doña Juana Guerra Fernández).
Prime Minister Rajoy’s maternal grandmother was named Carmen López Mosquera (the daughter of Manuel López Vigo, and of a woman surnamed Mosquera Otero). Manuel was the son of Juan López Varela and Andrea Vigo y Díaz. Carmen’s maternal grandparents were Antonio Mosquera Varela and Constanza Otero y Barcia.
