John Kay is a German-born Canadian singer, songwriter, and musician. He is the frontman of the rock band Steppenwolf.

John is the son of Elsbeth (Zimmermann) and Fritz Krauledat. His father, who was a soldier in the second World War, died in battle two months before John was born. John and his mother left for Arnstadt, Germany, to escape the Soviet troops, soon after. At the age of four, John, his mother, and his aunt left for West Germany, where they had relatives, and settled in Hanover. In 1958, John moved with his mother and stepfather to Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

John is married to Jutta Maue, with whom he has a daughter.
