James Cleverly is a British politician and Army Reserve officer. He has been Co-Chairman of the Conservative Party, and Minister without Portfolio, both, from 24 July, 2019 to 13 February, 2020, Secretary of State for Education, from 7 July, 2022 to 6 September, 2022, Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, from 6 September, 2022 to 13 November, 2023, and Home Secretary, from 13 November, 2023 to 5 July, 2024; as well as, a Member of Parliament for Braintree, since 7 May, 2015, among other duties.

James is the son of Evelyn Suna, a midwife, and James Philip Cleverly, a surveyor. His father is English, and white. His mother is Sierra Leonean. He attended private schools Riverston School and Colfe’s School, both in Lee, South East London. After a time in the Army, he gained a degree at Thames Valley University, now the University of West London.

His cousin is lawyer, entrepreneur, philanthropist, and businessperson Chris Cleverly.

He is married to Susannah Sparks, with whom he has two children.

James’s maternal grandfather was surnamed Auber.
