Alejandro García Padilla is a Puerto Rican lawyer. A member of the Popular Democratic Party, he served as the 11th Governor of Puerto Rico, from January 2, 2013 to January 2, 2017. He was previously Puerto Rico Secretary of Consumer Affairs, from January 2, 2005 to January 1, 2009.

His father, Luis Gerardo García y Sánchez, was born in Santurce, San Juan. His mother, María de los Ángeles Padilla y Passalacqua, was born in Ponce. He is married to certified public accountant Wilma Pastrana Jiménez.

All of Alejandro’s known ancestors were listed as “blanco” (white) on civil records.

Alejandro’s paternal grandparents were Carlos García Cadórniga (the son of Eugenio García Manso and Filomena Cadórniga Camba) and Eduvigis Sánchez Colón (the daughter of José Sánchez and Rosa Colón). Carlos was a Spanish immigrant, from Navia, Asturias. Eugenio was the son of Luis García Avello and Rogelia Manso Infanzón.

Alejandro’s maternal grandfather was Inés Antonio Padilla Costa (the son of Julio María Padilla y Iguina and María Ángela Costa y Semidey). Julio was the son of José de Jesús Padilla y Alfonso and María Magdalena Iguina y Lozano. Ángela was the daughter of Corsican immigrant Antonio Costa y Palmieri, and of Ana Semidey y Semidey.

Alejandro’s maternal grandmother was Julia Passalacqua y Rodríguez (the daughter of Juan Passalacqua y Palmieri and Ana María Rodríguez y Braschi). Juan was the son of Corsican immigrant Luis Passalacqua y Costa, and of Julia Palmieri y Santiago. Ana was the daughter of Felipe Rodríguez y MacCarthy and Eufrosina Braschi y Rodríguez. Eufrosina’s father, Giuseppe (or José in Spanish) Braschi, was an Italian immigrant. The family name “MacCarthy” is of Irish origin.

Alejandro’s matrilineal ancestry can be traced back to his fourth great-grandfather, Gerónima González, of Juana Díaz.
