Emily Haines is a Canadian singer and songwriter. She has also performed as Emily Haines & The Soft Skeleton. She is the lead singer, keyboardist, and songwriter for Canadian indie rock band Metric, and is also a member of indie rock band/musical collective Broken Social Scene. Feist is also a member of Broken Social Scene.

Emily was born in New Delhi, India, and raised in Ontario, Canada. Her father is American poet Paul Haines. Her mother is Jo Haines. Her siblings are Tim and Avery Haines.

Emily holds both Canadian and U.S. citizenship.

Emily’s paternal grandfather was Clarence H. Haines (the son of Roy William Haines and Emma J. Holzhei). Clarence was born in Michigan. Roy was the son of Squire Reuben Haines, who was Canadian, and of Susan A. Holden, who was from Lincolnshire, England. Emma was the daughter of Leonard Holzhei, whose parents were German, and of Margaret Z. “Maggie” Heinlein, whose own parents were also German.

Emily’s paternal grandmother was Gretchen R. Van Wormer (the daughter of Russell Van Wormer and Emma Frederica Grainger). Gretchen was born in Michigan. Russell was the son of Ethmer VanWormer and Julia Docherty, whose own father, Thomas Docherty, was born on the Isle of Man, of Irish descent, and whose own mother, Mary Racknor, was from Bavaria, Germany. Emma was the daughter of David Arnold Grainger/Granger, whose father was English, and of Elnora Haines.
