to Ty:Black people were all over Mexico, not just in the towns in the south. The reason the ones in the North don’t know is because they are not taught this in schools. Also over time, the whiter mexicans have taken over, and any black who was light enough simply blended in.Also over time,as the bloodline thins, certain traits become harder to see,and their Descendants simply ID themselves as Mexican;and not Afro-Mexican.I’ve shown plenty of evidence on this site to support what I’m saying

      • Carmen says:

First of all let me clarify that in no way shape or form do I condone racism or am I anti-black; I think the black race is very beautiful (as are all races). But more importantly, I regret bumping into threads like this in which race is STILL so important (especially to define your morality: one color = “good”, another color = “bad”). I disgaree with these attitudes completely, in this day and age I believe there’s no place for
That being said: I’m Mexican, I was born in Mexico as were my parents, I have lived in Mexico all my life, in northern Mexico (my state has a border with Arizona, which don’t forget until not too long ago was also Mexico)…and I’m just wondering: HOW can you just write a bunch of lies? do you really expect no one to call you on it? Do you know what region of Mexico you’re talking about? “The reason the ones in the North don’t know is because they are not taught this in schools”: ARE YOU KIDDING ME????
Yes, there are less Afro-Mexican people in the Northern part of Mexico due to the logical fact that the region wasn’t colonized until much later than the Central and Southern part of Mexico, and therefore in a still remains a very lightly populated areas. There are several and perfectly logical factors which I’ll break down in this post, since the level of ignorance I’ve seen in this page’s threads -and especially in @Fuzzybear posts-is unbelievable!
First of all: Northern Mexico is a very vast territory. It was very lightly populated with “native”, or American-indian population: one inhabitant per 1/2 sq mile (or 1 x 1 sq. km). This was BEFORE the arrival of the Spaniards (white Europeans), compared to the heavily indigenous populated Central and the Southern part of Mexico.
Spaniards arrived in Northern Mexico over 100-150 years LATER that when they arrived in the Central & Southern part of Mexico, due to geographical conditions: Topographically, Northern Mexico is difficult to access since, on one side the mountains Sierra Madre cuts off big chunks of territory from one another ,and from another side we’re bordered by the sea of Cortez. Another HUGE geographical factor was the extreme desertic to semi-desertic weather: Northwestern Mexico is very hot and very dry, thus deeming it undesirable and unbearable for the Spaniards.
When whites (Spaniards) DO slowly arrive to Northern Mexico, they’re formed mainly of clergy (Jesuits),and little to no secular population until the mid-18th century, thus the racial mixing was much slower than that of Central and Southern Mexico.
Yes, the Spaniards DID bring with them the system of slavery, (the indigenous tribes of North Mexico didn’t practice it), but since 150 years had passed, colonial politics of the Spanish monarchy had changed, their penetration into Northern Mexico was much less agressive, the use of military force (which resulted in extermination of natives, which in turn results into the need to import free labor, therefore the need for African slaves), and a lengthy war was now seen as costly and undesirable by the Spanish crown; instead missionaries were sent instead to colonize indigenous tribes by working within them, teaching and learning from the natives to use their resources in benefit of Spain; rather than conquering and exterminating them by military force (which was the case in Central and Southern Mexico 150 years before). Of course, there was resistance from the tribes, but none that would exterminate the natives as free labor, thus having a steady supply of workers without the need of importing African slaves…which was the case of the United States as well as the Caribbean and -in smaller degree- the southern part of Mexico (the Caribbean part of Mexico and some regions of the gulf of Mexico, such as Veracruz)…not because it’s “bad” to be black, but because the density of native population used for slavery was sufficient.
White and mixed white secular migration only happens in the 19th century, when new technologies makes the conditions for life in the extreme desert bearable, and new discoveries of precious metals in Northwestern Mexico makes migrating to an extreme climate much more attractive to the white (which are not limited to Spain anymore, but now also includes all of Europe, as well white North Americans US, Canada) and mixed-white Mexican. It’s here where some people of African ascendance may have come to Northern Mexico, By then the independance of Mexico from Spain was in process, and with it slavery -as such- is abolished. Other ways of forced labor where practiced, such as minimal wages combined with
a system of continuous debt from the “patron” to the worker. But the enforcers of such forced labor were NOT the Spaniards anymore, but mostly the North American whites who were the owners, supervisors or chiefs of almost all the huge mines in Northwestern Mexico. This would continue until the Mexican Revolution 100 years later.
There IS however racial history that is not taught in schools but is very palpable in the region: the large presence of Asians (spefically Chinese) in Northwestern Mexico, and their persecution by the government in the late 19th and early 20th century.
        Conclusion:
Mexico is a BIG country, with very diverse climates, geographical position as well as indigenous people and -therefore- HISTORY (racial and otherwise), you can’t generalize…if you don’t feel you can generalize race for a country the size of Italy, imagine how stupid it is to try to generalize for a country 10x bigger? Yes, we share the basic points of common history as a country, but the specifics vary A LOT. If you don’t know about something, ask (it’s as easy as Google) before dreaming up wild conspiracy theories and stating them as facts.

Ok first, sorry I wasn’t able to speak on this last night, family problems and my head was everywhere. Now your the 5th mexican to come at me,and from what I see,you don’t know anymore than they did.Anyhow according to you,I’m a ignorant, lying person who likes to spread conspiracy theories, did I get that right? Ok,now you say that (there are less Afro-Mexican people in the North).Would you know what they looked like, because I always see people saying I never seen any black people up there.Well that might be because they look like this mascogos people:

These people are descendant of Black Seminoles who were given land and used as guards of Mexico. Did you know these people? They live in Coahuila and two other places in Mexico. Now you know why people don’t see Afro-Mexicans,it’s because they call themselves (Mexicans)Now according to you,the Spaniards didn’t try going to the north for 150yrs,however this says they tried almost right away:
          http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coahuila
and had settlements by 1524.Now black people were brought in because the Indians were to weak and pretty badly devastated by disease, and some stupid priest asked to stop using the natives and bring in black people. Now the Indians weren’t used as slaves anymore, and the black people were used as miners in places like(Guanajuato):
          http://www.smithsonianeducation.org/migrations/legacy/almleg.html
You have it in your head that only a small number of black people were brought, but according to records at least 200,000-500,000 were brought if not more:

Now in 1781 many of the pobladores who were recruited by the Spanish crown to populated Los Angeles were Black Mexicans who came from Rosario Sinaloa, which by the way 2/3 of the population according to Spanish census were Black mexicans .Also Mexico had runaway slave colonies all along the Mexican border .Also many of the people who populated the areas of Nacogolches,San Antonio ,Laredo Bahia,Los Angeles etc were black mexicans:
          http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Los_Angeles_Pobladores
Even your own second President was a Afro-Mexican.Now as you can see from the first thing I showed you black didn’t only come from the south.they came from the states into mexico(invited in).Tejanos were continuously helping Slaves get into north Mexico. There was a running joke, that if a slave say come lets run to the north to free, they laugh and say why,we can walk right over to the Rio Grande and be free.Mexican men continuously stole black women slaves and ran down into Mexico(Thousands of black slaves).Mexico refused to return runaway slaves, and all these black people mixed in with the rest of the population, which is why nobody sees black people. The first mayor of Los Angeles was Afro-Mexican(Juan Franciso Reyes),and last governor Pico Pico was Afro-Mexican.In the Battle of Puebla in 1862,(Creoles of color) and Afro mexicans fought in this battles.By 1890,there were 10 different colonies(large ones) of black people along the border of Mexico. There’s to much for me to put down,I left out a lot of stuff.:

            Afro-Mexicans: the forgotten people

The story of Mexico’s failure to credit and acknowledge its Afro-Mestizo history is painful, given what else has happened politically and socially since the early 1990s. For example, in Chiapas, the southernmost state of Mexico bordering Guatemala, a rebel indigenous movement took up arms and threatened to overthrow oligarchic land owners to relieve the burden of generations of near-feudal rule. The rebels have successfully petitioned for increased federal government attention to land reform, education and health needs. And, the current president, Vicente Fox, was freely elected from an opposition party, which had not happened in Mexico for over 70 years.

Blacks have been officially “invisible” in Mexico because until recently the federal government did not recognize them in census counts. This was tolerated over the centuries by the policy of mestizaje or “cosmic mixture” of exclusively Spanish (Europeans) and indigenous (Indian) peoples. This policy was perpetuated by a mythology that neatly fit with the ideology of the early 16 th century conquests by Hernan Cortes, a representative of the Spanish crown, who subdued the Aztec emperor Montezuma II, pre-colonial ruler of most of Mexico and Central America. Afro-Mexicans therefore, until recently, had no official recognition and it was consequently easy to dismiss them. However, due to the emergence of the recent “third root” movement, that is increasingly difficult to do. In that regard, some institutions like the University of Veracruz presently sponsor academic courses that emphasize the African impact and history. But, this divergence is still rare.

In modern Mexico, the so-called “Third Root” movement is headed by Afro-Mexicans and is dedicated to recognizing and improving the civic, social and economic conditions of this much-neglected group. Mexican blacks have had a significant history not well recognized by the government and media. But some groups of Afro-Mexicans have started to speak out. Mexican scholars such as Sagrario Cruz-Carretaro, at the University of Veracruz, bring attention to Afro-Mexicans and have made studies of Yanga and the black towns near border crossings between Texas and Mexico’s Coahuila state. She is the co-curator of a significant museum exhibition in Chicago, Illinois, that boldly spells out the Afro-Mexican contribution to modern history. “It’s the most important thing we’ve ever done,” said Mexican Fine Arts Museum in Chicago president Carlos Tortolero. “‘The African Presence in Mexico’ tells a virtually unknown and still-unfolding story.”

Mexican filmmakers such as Rafael Rebollar are receiving recognition for their documentary work illustrating “La Raiz Olvidar” (The Forgotten Ones) and “Los Moscogos.” The latter film concerns so-called “Black Seminoles,” a mixed-race people of Native American and African slave heritage, who were forced into submission by American general, later President Andrew Jackson, and ultimately were forced to abandon their traditional lands in the states of Georgia and Florida for a life of neglect in Oklahoma and Texas in the 1840’s. Descendants of these same people later gained distinction from the U.S. Army as scouts, who won four Medals of Honor for military campaigns against the Apache and Comanche nations in the south-western United States. Intellectuals like Cruz-Carretaro and Rebollar have, in their respective fields, started to organize and demand a strong public acknowledgement of the role of Afro-Mexicans in shaping Mexico’s national character.

Although the percentages were low, the population of enslaved Africans in Mexico had a huge presence in colonial Mexico (1521-1810) working as domestic servants, day laborers, cattle ranchers, artisans and miners on haciendas (large plantation estates).

You see, there was, and to a wide extent currently is, outright denial about a tangible African bloodline running through Mexico’s population. I recall quite clearly more than a decade ago, listening to a television interview with an official of the Mexican government. The official was describing the ethnic make-up of the Mexican population, and nowhere did she mention any African population element in the entire country. This “racial amnesia,” as it has been termed, officially exists despite the fact that some 200,000 Africans were brought to Mexico during the early years of the slave trade. In fact, historians estimate that the African population of Mexico constituted around a half-million persons by 1810.

And would it surprise you to know that Vincente Guerrero, a leading general of the Mexican War of Independence and the new nation’s second president, appears to have been of African descent. And, finally, photographs of the great revolutionary hero Emiliano Zapata show clearly that he was of African descent. Even modern-day rebels from Mexico’s southern Chiapas state proudly called themselves “zapatistas” during the 1990s.

Dating to the years immediately following the beginning of the Mexican Revolution in 1910, official national ideology defined the Mexican population as a unified one, created out of the mixture of Spanish and indigenous population—mestizo. The African element was completely and unambiguously excluded. In fact, since 1928, Mexico has celebrated October 12 as “The Day of the Race” and this singular Spanish-Indian mix denies the African-descended population. In that early era, even Mexican public commentators, media officials and university scholars were in total denial of the African contribution to Mexican history

          • Jean Pierre says:

Mexicans do not use adjunct phrases such as African Mexicans, White Mexicans, etc. in their common speech; each group is respectively named by their race, ethnicity, nationality, or phenotype alone. Afro-Mexicans are usually just called “Negros” or “Morenos” (Spanish for Black).
Even Mulatto would be used as well.
Despite being faced with discrimination and poverty, some Afro Mexicans openly embrace their African heritage and want it to be recognized. Afro Mexicans in Coyolillo, in Veracruz, celebrate Carnival, which has its roots in Africa. In the village of El Ciruelo, a small number of Afro-Mexicans have organized as Mexico Negro and are fighting to have racial categories added to the census.

ctually Mexico has one of the lowest African population in Latin America. The 3 lowest countries are.

            1. Argentina Less than 1% Touts itself as the Whitest
            Latin American country.
            2. Chile
            3. Mexico

Admixture levels in Mexico have been studied by the genome project of the National Institute of Genomic Medicine (INMEGEN). Their studies have shown a strong presence of Amerindian and European genetic contributions to the overall Mexican population, with a relatively small African contribution that is slightly above the East Asian genetic admixture.[1][6]

Main ports of entry for African Slaves into Mexico
Veracruz, Campeche, Pánuco and Acapulco were the main ports for the entrance of African slaves. Many live in Coastal towns as we know their may have been discrimination against the population.
fro Mexicans historically have been located in certain communities, most notably in two coastal areas of Guerrero and Oaxaca (called Costa Chica), and in parts of Veracruz, Colima, Campeche, and Quintana Roo. Afro-Mexicans are usually just called “Negros” or “Morenos” (Spanish for Black).
Also Mulattoes for (Spanish and Black ancestry) & Zambo for (Indian and African ancestry)

Slavery in the early colonial period was often harsh and led to occasional resistance. In 1609 Gaspar Yanga and Francisco de la Matosa led an African revolt in Veracruz. After several fierce battles, Yanga succeeded in negotiating peace with the Spanish viceroy, Luis de Velasco. A black community of “San Lorenzo” (later renamed Yanga) was founded and still exists. However, this did not end all hostilities. The Spanish crown sent a mixed force of Indians, Creoles (Mexican-born Spanish), and Mestizos (mixed race Spanish and Indian) to pacify the area to end to the actions of the fugitive slaves.

Some of the Afro Mexicans in Yucatán relocated to Belize, where there is an African presence. In recent years, Afro Mexican numbers been have increased by immigrants from Caribbean countries and even Africans who came as contract workers.

The black population of New Spain in the very early sixteenth century constituted only about one percent of the total.[4] However, by 1646 their number had grown to 35,089 due to the importation of many African slaves. The number declined in later years, and by 1742 only 15,980 remained.

Like I said Mexico was the first to abolish slavery and 1rst to have a African descent president. U.S barely has its first. Technically they were both are Mulattoes since both have white ancestry. Now when we look at a whole their is not one nation without African ancestry. Japan, China, Spain, Sweeden, France, England, & many others have a African population

I agree with what the first guy wrote about Northern mex. not being educated on ALL OF THEIR ROOTS……. At the turn of the 20th century, early 1900’s, 2/3 of sinaloa’s population was Mulato…… Pio Pico Rivera was the last gov. of Ca. before the U.S. took it and Pio was also Mulato….. After Vicente Guerrero (El Negro) led his troops against the spanish and defeated them in 1829 and after he abolished slavery in Mex. that very year, spaniards ran and hid in Texas/Colorado where they plotted the murder of Vicente Guerrero….. Once the whites (spanish) once again had control they decided it would be a good thing to ” WHITEN” Mexico so during the early 1860’s they invited germans to help settle N. mex. When the nazis arrived they brought their awful sounding accordion “POLKAS” I not only despise that music I really wish they would pack up and go back to germany and help their people built their BMW’S…… Everytime I see a red headed blue eyed white person living in Mex. speaking spanish I can’t help to think just HOW SPECIAL THEY THINK THEY ARE……. As far as I’m concerned they are not true Mejicanos…. the true Mejicanos were there at the onset of COLONIAL “NEW SPAIN” and as far as I can research, there were NO NAZI’S HELPING TO CHANGE NEW SPAIN TO MEJICO!!!!!! So to think you don’t have any Black blood in you, well that’s just wishful thinking on your part. It’s funny also how the Aborigines that’s migrated all through South East Asian Islands and to Australia and even in to the South Pacific. You know I was reading about that last night, about the routes and land bridges that the ancient Africans used to cross over to these other place. Those bridges which accourse are no longer visible because of water.Places like the Sardinia land bridge that some ancient Africans used to cross over into Europe and that satelites always show pictures of now. That why I think Columbus thought he was in India, because the Tainos didn’t look the way everybody thinks they looked.Your right,we can forget about them give Africans credit for anything they ever did.Because they want to believe that the people who are in those places now,are the way they always looked. That their the ones who built all those anicent cities. You know this African guy who felt he was more Arab, told me that there’s no way West Africans ever did anything, like cross the sea because black people can’t make a boat.Could you believe he actually believed that. Also no matter what I shown him,he told me I was just being afrocentric, why would white men lie.Could you belive this was coming from a African

Hey Fussybear, the African guy you’re speaking of sounds very similar to my African-American Co-worker, who seem to believe that all Black People in all of the Americas are all products of slavery. He also has a similar viewpoint about West Africans countries. I mention also about the theory of Black Africans Navigated by sea into the Americas. He use to believe that Black people play no real Significance in early civilization. Until I was able to prove who were the People of Babylonian, Mesopotamia, Kemet (KMT the Ancient name Egypt) Cush (Kush the Ancient name for Ethiopia, were all Black civilizations at their very earliest core. Even the Greeks and Romans historians, such as Herodotus, Homer, Celsus, Plutarch, Tacitus, Eusebius and Diodorus stated that Ancient Egypt and Ancient Ethiopia were Black People. Just only until recent history the Europeans that decided to promote a superior race of people near the 1500 to 1600. They actually flat-out disagree with their own historians from Greeks and Romans very early civilizations. The vary Europeans that were promoting Slavery in various regions around the world. Spoke in direct opposition to their very renowned historians by saying the Ancient Egyptians and Ancient Ethiopians were Black White People and not Negroid/Negro. Talk about the insane lunacy of those Europeans that was spewing this hatred. They even use the Bible to prove their point and propagate their lies on a global scale. For all those who hold these scared writings dear to their heart, should commit a fair amount to time reading to get a good understanding. Now back to the bible, yes they flip the script, coming up with that silly curse of ham and hiding the description of the real jews, and then leaving my favorite miracle out(the hand to the bosom, and it turning white). From what I read, white skin was a sin not black, but like I said, they flip the script. Now the reason they want Kemet and all the other places,it’s a superior complex.See it was done to them,so they flip it and did it to use.The moors looked down on them calling them(stringy hair, pot belly, pale skin beasts)now for anyone reading this, they said it not me.They did like the women thou. Also they couldn’t let be known that Africans did something they could. For the superiority complex to work, they could let their kids see black people as being intelligent. Now to keep the plan going, they took kids fro their parents and only taught them what they wanted to know, and the cycle kept going.Oh I’ll talk to you later, gotta cut this short

So she is Latino as well as black too………..

well first, does her parentS being from those countries stop her from being black, not to mention she said herself that she was a black woman in a interview she gave. Also both those places are known to have black people in them.just because she’s a Latina doesn’t change that

Being from La. I see race is viewed a lot different than some other states. Living in Ga. Now they only know three things and that’s black white and Mexican. They are far from understanding race. But I understand what u mean creole504.

My mother is Afro-Dominican, my father is Black and Portuguese. The reason Zoe is “Black” is because the ethnic composition of Dominican is African, Native American and European (usually Spaniard). It is clear by looking at her that her Dominican is made up of more African than the other components. A lot of Dominicans and Puerto Ricans are so whitewashed that they run with the European aspect of their culture if they look white and try to denounce the Black in them. Jennifer Lopez, Ricky Martin and Hector Elizondo are clearly Puerto Ricans with a much heavier European component in their ethnic mixture than the other races. Whereas Zoe Saldana, Sammy Sosa and Robinson Cano are Dominicans with an obviously much larger African percentage in their blood than the other races. In a nutshell, Zoe is Afro-Latina. If she considers herself Black, which she does, then she’s Black. I know most people can’t imaging being Black and other things and actually wanting to be considered Black, but it happens. I’m that way and so is Zoe.

Puerto ricans and Dominicans are of african descent ,she was born in america ,as far I can tell her complexion is not comparable to that of a “white” person. What more could you possibly ask for?

There is nothing wrong with being Black. Why do people make such a big deal out of skin color. Just except your self. If you’re black as night or if you’re white as chalk so what. You better love and uplift yourself because nobody’s going to do it for you. Flaunt it!!!!!! :) :) :)
