Thanasi was born in Adelaide, South Australia, to Greek parents, Voula and Trevor Kokkinakis. They were both born in the Peloponnese peninsula of Greece, in the cities of Kalamata and Tripoli, respectively. Thanasi has a brother, Pan, and a sister, Christina. He holds both Australian and Greek citizenship.
