Sergio Mattarella is an Italian politician, lawyer, and judge. He has been President of Italy, since 3 February, 2015. He was previously Minister of Education, from 23 July, 1989 to 27 July, 1990, Deputy Prime Minister of Italy, from 21 October, 1998 to 22 December, 1999, Minister of Defence, from 22 December, 1999 to 11 June, 2001, and Judge of the Constitutional Court, from 11 October, 2011 to 2 February, 2015.
His father, Bernardo Mattarella, was an anti-fascist who, alongside Alcide De Gasperi and other prominent Catholic politicians, helped found the Christian Democracy (DC) party, which dominated the Italian political scene for almost fifty years, with Bernardo serving as a minister several times. His mother was Maria Buccellato. Sergio’s brother, Piersanti Mattarella, was a politician, who was President of Sicily, from 20 March, 1978 to 6 January, 1980, his death. He was assassinated by the Mafia, leading Sergio to enter politics. Sergio moved to Rome during his youth.
He was married to Marisa Chiazzese, until her death, with whom he has three children, including lawyer Laura Mattarella.
Sergio’s paternal grandfather was Santo Mattarella (the son of Bernardo Mattarella and Benedetta Cracchiolo). Santo was born in Castellammare del Golfo, Provincia di Trapani, Sicily, and was a sailor. Bernardo was the son of Gaspare Mattarella and Maria Asaro. Benedetta was the daughter of Santi Cracchiolo and Maria Cosentino.
Sergio’s paternal grandmother was Caterina Di Falco (the daughter of Giuseppe Di Falco and Antonina Di Liberti). Caterina was born in Castellammare del Golfo, Provincia di Trapani. Antonina was the daughter of Francesco Maria Di Liberti.
Sergio’s maternal grandfather was Antonino Buccellato (the son of Antonino Buccellato and Maria Messina). Sergio’s grandfather Antonino was born in Castellammare del Golfo, Provincia di Trapani. Sergio’s great-grandfather Antonino was the son of Vito Buccellato and Palma Bosco. Maria was the daughter of Vito Messina and Giuseppa Marchese.
Sergio’s maternal grandmother was named Maria Romano (the daughter of a father surnamed Romano, and of Antoniettà Fundarò).
