Sam Esmail is an American film and television director, writer, and producer. He created, was the showrunner of, and wrote and directed episodes for, the show Mr. Robot, on which he also appeared; and directed the first season of the show Homecoming. He also directed and wrote the films Comet (2014) and Leave the World Behind. He runs production company Esmail Corp. His works often touch on technology and alienation in the modern world.

Sam’s parents are Egyptian Muslim immigrants. He is fluent in Arabic. He was raised in South Carolina, Charlotte, North Carolina; and Sewell, New Jersey. Sam is married to actress, director, producer, singer, and songwriter Emmy Rossum, with whom he has two children.
