Richard is the son of Elsa Winnifred (von Benzon; later Matthews) and Charles Axiom Chamberlain.

Richard’s paternal grandfather was William Overton/Overman Chamberlain (the son of William Newton Chamberlain and Mary Ada Overman). Richard’s grandfather William was born in Indiana.
