Birth Name: Paula Maxine Patton

Place of Birth: Los Angeles, California, United States

Date of Birth: December 5, 1975

Ethnicity:
*father – African-American
*mother – German, English, smaller amount of Dutch

Paula Patton is an American actress. She is known for her roles in the films Hitch, Idlewild, Déjà Vu (2006), Jumping the Broom, Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire, Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, 2 Guns, Warcraft, and Sacrifice (2019).

Her father, Charles Patton, is black. Her mother, Joyce (Van Raden), who is white, has German, English, and at least 1/16th Dutch, ancestry. Paula has identified herself as Black. She has stated:

I find it [the term “biracial”] offensive. It’s a way for people to separate themselves from African-Americans… a way of saying ‘I’m better than that.’ I’m black because that’s the way the world sees me. People aren’t calling Barack Obama biracial. Most people think there’s a black president.

Paula has a son with her former husband, singer and songwriter Robin Thicke.

Paula’s maternal grandfather was Benjamin Alexander Van Raden, Jr. (the son of Benjamin Van Raden and Grace Read Alexander). Paula’s grandfather Benjamin was born in New York. Paula’s great-grandfather Benjamin was born in Nebraska, the son of Carl Edward Holeman Van Raden, whose father was Dutch and whose mother was German, and of Louisa Bergman, whose parents were German. Paula’s great-grandmother Grace was born in New York, and had English ancestry. Grace was the daughter of Robert Read Alexander and Laura Davis, who were from Massachusetts.

If Paula is of a mixed heritage she should claim everything she knows she is mixed with. Or just say white&black. Being black is not a bad thing nor is being white. It’s all about the type of person you’ve become. So to only claim one half of your heritage would mean that a person would disregaurd the other. After all it took both parents (no matter what race) to create her. Along with the help of GOD.

I am proud of my African American, European (British, welsch, scotts-irish, french, german), Asian, and Native American (Choktaw, Cherokee) roots. But you know what? When people look at me they don’t know WHAT I am. I’ve gotten anything from “I thought you were just a tanned white person” (yes, from “full” white people), to puerto rican, to filipino, to black. I’m secure enough with myself and my ancestry to answer AMERICAN when someone asks me what I am.
I think each individual has the right to identify how they wish, and that everyone else should respect that decision. If Paula Patton (who obviously has mixed ancestry) just wants to claim African American, that’s cool. If she were to ever claim white, I’d say she’s a tanned white, but that’s cool too! I think this black/white categorizing thing needs to stop, where one group of people tries to claim or disown an individual. Let individuals be individuals, and if they decide to join your “team,” then that’s great.

America is just too mixed up to put black/white labels on people anymore!

i think she prefers her african ancestries, which is good kudos to her, better than denying shes black

      Magdalena,

I agree that it is nice to see someone actually embrace being black. I am black with a non-black parent and it is amazing how many people I meet who want me to highlight being something other than black.

I do not know what the drama is. Being black is not a bad thing…

you guys are calling spaniards racist yet your making all the racist comments. your so ignorant for labeling a group of ppl as racist. not everyone is gonna be like that.
thats just like me saying every black man is a thug(which is NOT true at all) from just seeing a few in my life.

the appeal to ignorance in this generation and time and day is truly sad.

        • Wtf says:
