Her father was Indian sitar virtuoso, composer, and politician Ravi Shankar (Ravindra Shankar Chowdhury); he was born in Benares, Benares State, British India. Her mother, Sue Jones, is an American concert producer, and has English, Scottish, and Scots-Irish/Northern Irish ancestry. Norah is a half-sister of graphic artist, musician, and composer Shubhendra Shankar and sitar player and composer Anoushka Shankar. After her parents’ separation in the mid 1980s, Norah was raised by her mother in Grapevine, Texas.

Norah is married to keyboardist Pete Remm, with whom she has two children.
