She has also recorded dance-pop, and utilizes an animated flow in her singing. She has sold more than 100 million records worldwide, and is known as the “Queen of Rap.”

Nicki was born Onika Tanya Maraj on Saint James, Trinidad and Tobago, the daughter of Carol (Daniel) and Robert Maraj, a financial executive. Her parents were both gospel singers. Her paternal grandfather, whose surname was Maraj, was of Indian-Trinidadian, from India, descent; her father was of Dougla background, a Caribbean term for a mix of Indian and African. It appears that the rest of her family is of African-Trinidadian ancestry. She has evidently also stated that her great-grandfather is Japanese. It is not clear if this is accurate.

Nicki was raised on Saint James initially, though her mother immigrated to New York City, U.S., and later brought Nicki and her brother over when Nicki was five, settling in Queens.

Nicki is married to Kenneth Petty, with whom she has a son.

    so she’s 3/4 black
    and 1/4 indian?
i thought so, she doesn’t really look that exotic to me
e.g. tatyana ali and chilli are both half black and indian and they look more mixed than her

Tatyana Ali is black, Indian and Native, like generally all Afro-Panamanians who are considered a mix of Mestizo (mostly Native American and white) and African. It is rare for whites and blacks to not be mixed with Natives in Panama, they are much like Mexico and all of Central America in which the percentages of non-Native citizens are quite low, even with the ones who consider themselves more white but are really Castizos (to use outdated terms) not Criollos (though contrary to popular believe, Criollos do have Native American ancestry too, but to an even lesser extent than Castizos) . Even people like Dolores del Río who consider themselves white have blatant Native ancestry. In a way, it is great that places like Panama and Mexico are mostly indigenous – so be it Mestizo, so part white too – because the USA only has a low percentage of Native Americans.

Alot of us in Trini are actually part asian. China isn’t the only country with slanted eyes.

      • mdd says:

theres a nice little chinese descent community in the caribbean in places like cuba and especially in the other west indie islands. im so confused why people dont know the different ethnic grous that contributed to the mixing pot not just in america but the wholllee americas. clearly despite whatever surgery she may or may not have done she’s still mixed. every african american or person of african descent living in the americas that is NOT the actual color black..is pretty much mixed…duh!
