She has also recorded dance-pop, and utilizes an animated flow in her singing. She has sold more than 100 million records worldwide, and is known as the “Queen of Rap.”

Nicki was born Onika Tanya Maraj on Saint James, Trinidad and Tobago, the daughter of Carol (Daniel) and Robert Maraj, a financial executive. Her parents were both gospel singers. Her paternal grandfather, whose surname was Maraj, was of Indian-Trinidadian, from India, descent; her father was of Dougla background, a Caribbean term for a mix of Indian and African. It appears that the rest of her family is of African-Trinidadian ancestry. She has evidently also stated that her great-grandfather is Japanese. It is not clear if this is accurate.

Nicki was raised on Saint James initially, though her mother immigrated to New York City, U.S., and later brought Nicki and her brother over when Nicki was five, settling in Queens.

Nicki is married to Kenneth Petty, with whom she has a son.

  1. Trini Dude says:

To my Trini eyes Nicki looks more Indian than Black. They do a lot with her makeup and weave to make her look like a light-skinned sista, but she’s a dougla through and through.

See her old videos before the face and there’s no question. She favours her Indian parentage. Where do you think Maraj comes from?

      • OMG says:

sweetie she was born in america that classifies her as African-American. hell my ancestors came from cuba i sure as hell dont classify myself as cuban. you’re nationality is where you’re living/born hence the term NATIONality…..for instance AMERICAN. you’re ethnicity is where you acknowledge your forefather’s land. dont get it confused she was born in the Bronx or Queens- which makes her African american- no different than the thousands of Caribbean people living in america.
