Narendra Modi is an Indian politician. He has been Prime Minister of India, as well as Leader of the House, Lok Sabha; both, since 26 May, 2014. He has also been General Secretary (Organisation) of the Bharatiya Janata Party, from 5 January, 1998 to 7 October, 2001, Chief Minister of Gujarat, from 7 October, 2001 to 22 May, 2014, and a Member of Parliament, Lok Sabha, since 5 June, 2014. His administration of Gujarat increased economic growth, though was considered complicit in the anti-Muslim 2002 Gujarat riots. His Indian government has increased direct foreign investment and initiated a high-profile sanitation campaign; reduced spending on local healthcare, education, and social-welfare programmes, as well as environmental and labour laws; added the Goods and Services tax; and demonetized banknotes. His government passed the Citizenship Amendment Act, has led what is descrbed as the backsliding of democratic and individual rights in India, and revoked Jammu and Kashmir’s special status.
Narendra is the son of mother Hiraben Modi and father Damodardas Mulchand Modi, who had a tea business at the local railway station. He is from a Hindu Gujarati family, of oil presser (Modh-Ghanchi), an Other Backward Class (OBC) category. Narendra belongs to right-wing Hindu nationalist paramilitary volunteer organisation Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), and is often described as a Hindu nationalist.
Narendra is married to school teacher Jashodaben Modi (born Jashodaben Chimanlal Modi); though the two have not lived together since 1968, and have not seen each other since roughly 1970.
