Michelle Wu is an American politician. A member of the Democratic Party, she has been Mayor of Boston, Massachusetts, since November 16, 2021. She was previously President of the Boston City Council, from January 2016 to January 2018. She is the first woman, and the first non-white person, to be elected the city’s Mayor. Her odinances on the council and actions as mayor have included protecting wetlands and the environment, and helping regulate short-term rentals. She has worked to increase fare-free public transportation.
She was raised on the South Side of Chicago, the daughter of Taiwanese parents. Michelle speaks Mandarin Chinese. She is married to community lender Conor Pewarski, with whom she has two children.
