All but one of the celebrities you mentioned have Italian surnames by birth. That probably affects their identity to a large degree.

  2. follers says:

What makes you say that Travolta, DiCaprio, and Ricci identify as full Italian? Travolta has said his household was more Irish in culture, and Ricci has said that the Italian has been “bred out of her”.

  3. bablah says:

Leo stated several times that his mother is Russian. How is that ”identifiying as full Italian”?
On the other hand De Niro never really acknowledged the fact that he is only quarter Italian.

    • follers says:

Are you sure? Has he ever referred to himself as just Italian, without mentioning some of the other ancestry?

      • andrew says:

He even claimed to have Albanian ancestry.

      • bablah says:

for someone whose most iconic portrayals are Italian characters (-Taxi Driver and Goodfellas), he sure evades talking about it.

        • follers says:

In Goodfellas, DeNiro played James “Jimmy the Gent” Conway, an Irish-American. In Taxi Driver, he played Travis Bickle, and I don’t think there’s evidence that Bickle was supposed to be of Italian descent.

Unless you were trying to say something else with “-“, although it’s hard to tell.

Anyway, he really hasn’t played that many Italians. I’m sure it’s less than one fourth of all his roles, which makes sense.

one of the most remarkable of recent Bob’s roles is the Wasp Jack Byrnes of Meet the Parents

Madonna does acknowledge her Italian side more, but she has talked about her French side too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gT6xOqf-aWo

Lady Gaga is the worst offender of this. She claims her “entire family” is from Italy. Even though her maternal grandfather was not Italian.
