Mac DeMarco is a Canadian singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer. His music is known as “blue wave,” “slacker rock,” or “jizz jazz.” He founded Mac’s Record Label.
He is the son of Agnes and Vernor Winfield McBriare Smith III. He was raised in Edmonton, Alberta. His name was changed to MacBriare Samuel Lanyon DeMarco by his mother.
Mac’s paternal grandfather was Vernor Winfield MacBriare “Mac” Smith (the son of Vernor Winfield Smith and Lily Bury). Mac’s grandfather Vernor was a Justice of the Court of King’s Bench of Alberta, until his death. Mac’s great-grandfather Vernor Smith was a politician with the United Farmers of Alberta party, who served as Alberta Minister of Railways and Telephones, from August 31, 1921 to July 19, 1932. He was the son of John Alexander Smith and Amelia Gay, and had Scottish, Irish, and English ancestry. Mac’s great-grandmother Lily was born in England, the daughter of Edward Bury.
Mac’s paternal grandmother was Elizabeth Pamela Wildman (the daughter of Harry Wildman and Belle Lawrie).
Mac’s maternal grandfather likely was named Henry DeMarco.
Mac’s maternal grandmother was Sherrill Lanyon (the daughter of Samuel Earl Lanyon and Agnes Orme). Sherrill was born in Edmonton, Alberta, and was raised on a farm there and in Waskateneau.
