Lucy Maud Montgomery, also known as L.M. Montgomery, was a Canadian author. Her works include Anne of Green Gables, Emily of New Moon, and The Blythes are Quoted. She is considered one of the leading figures in Prince Edward Island history. In 1923, she was the first Canadian woman to become a member of the British Royal Society of Arts.
She was the daughter of Clara Woolner (McNeill) and Hugh John Montgomery. L.M. was married to Ewen Macdonald, until her death, with whom she had three children.
Lucy’s paternal grandfather was Donald Montgomery, Jr. (the son of Donald B. Montgomery and Ann/Nancy Penman). Lucy’s great-grandfather Donald was born in Campbelltown, Kintyre, Argyllshire, Scotland, the son of Hugh Montgomery and Mary MacShannon/McShannon. Nancy was the daughter of George Penman, and either Mary Margaret Edgar or Mary Cole.
Lucy’s paternal grandmother was Ann Murray (the daughter of David Murray and Elizabeth Penman). Ann was born on North Bedeque, Prince Edward Island. David was born in Eskdale, Dumfries, Scotland, and was the son of John Murray and Mary Ann Kennedy. Elizabeth was the daughter of George Penman and either Mary Margaret Edgar or Mary Cole. Lucy’s great-grandmothers Nancy and Elizabeth were siblings, making her grandparents first cousins.
Lucy’s maternal grandfather was Alexander Marquis MacNeill/McNeill (the son of William Simpson MacNeill/McNeill and Eliza Bliss Townsend). Alexander was born on Cavendish, Prince Edward Island. William was a member of the Prince Edward Island Legislature, from 1814 to 1834. He was the son of Scottish parents, John MacNeill/McNeill, from Argyllshire, and Margaret Simpson, from Gerbity, Elgin, Morayshire. Eliza was the daughter of Captain John Townsend and Elizabeth Kaye. Lucy’s great-uncle, her grandfather’s brother, William Simpson MacNeill, Jr. was also a political figure in Prince Edward Island.
Lucy’s maternal grandmother was Lucy Ann Woolner (the daughter of Robert Forster Woolner and Sarah/Sally Ann Kemp). Lucy was born in Dunwich, Suffolk, England. Robert was the son of James Woolner and Mary Forster.
