Robert was the son of Isabelle/Isabella (Moodie) and William Prescott Frost, Jr. His father was born in Kingston, Rockingham, New Hampshire, and was of Colonial American descent, with roots in New Hampshire going back to the 1600s. His ancestry was English, with remote Scottish, Cornish, and Welsh. Robert’s mother was a Scottish emigrant, from Alloa, Clackmannanshire. He spent his young years in Lawrence, Massachusetts, and Derry, New Hampshire. He married Elinor (White), with whom he had six children.

Robert’s paternal grandmother was Judith Colcord (the daughter of Daniel Colcord, Jr. and Mary “Polly” Woodman). Judith was born in Kingston, Rockingham, New Hampshire. Daniel was the son of Daniel Colcord and Dolly Clifford. Mary was the daughter of Samuel Woodman and Judith French.
