Kim Jong-un is a North Korean man. He has been Supreme Leader of North Korea, since, 17 December, 2011, succeeding his father and grandfather before him in the role. He has also been Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces of North Korea, since 30 December, 2011, Chairman of the State Affairs Commission, since 29 June, 2016, General Secretary of the Workers’ Party of Korea, since 10 January, 2021, and Chairman of the Workers’ Party of Korea, from 9 May, 2016 to 10 January, 2021, among other titles.

Kim is the son of Ko Yong-hui (or Ko Young-hee), a dancer, and Kim Jong-Il, who was the second Supreme Leader of North Korea, from 8 July, 1994 to 17 December, 2011. He is the grandson of Kim Il-sung, who actively led North Korea from 1948 to 1994.

His father was born Yuri Irsenovich Kim in Vyatskoye, Khabarovsky District, Khabarovsk Krai, Russian SFSR, Soviet Union, during World War II, to Korean parents. At the time, his own father commanded the 1st Battalion of the Soviet 88th Brigade, consisting of Chinese and Korean exiles.

His mother was born in Osaka, Japan, to a Korean father and a Japanese mother. His mother moved to North Korea in 1961/62 as part of a repatriation program, along with her family.

In North Korea, his father was known as “Dear Leader,” and upon his death, “Eternal General Secretary” of the WPK and the “Eternal Chairman of the National Defence Commission.” His mother is known as “The Respected Mother who is the Most Faithful and Loyal ‘Subject’ to the Dear Leader Comrade Supreme Commander,” “The Mother of Pyongyang,” and “The Mother of Great Songun Korea.”

Kim is married to Ri Sol-ju, with whom he has at least one child.

Kim’s paternal grandfather was Kim Il-sung (the son of Kim Hyong-jik and Kang Pan-sok). Kim Il-sung was born Kim Sŏng-ju in Mangyongdae, P’yŏng’yang-bu, P’yŏng’annam-do, Japanese Korea. Kim Il-sung actively led North Korea from roughly 1948 to 1994, his death. He has been Eternal President of North Korea, since September 5, 1998. He was also titled the 1st Supreme Leader of North Korea, from 9 September, 1948 to 8 July, 1994, Premier of North Korea, from 9 September, 1948 to 28 December, 1972, General Secretary of the Workers’ Party of Korea, from 30 June, 1949 to 8 July, 1994, titled as Chairman until 11 October, 1966, Supreme Commander of the Korean People’s Army, from 5 July, 1950 to 24 December, 1991, and President of North Korea, from 28 December, 1972 to 6 September, 1994. His family moved to Manchuria around 1920, and he later returned to the Korean Peninsula.

Kim’s great-grandfather Kim Hyong-jik was a Korean independence activist. He was the son of Kim Bo-hyon and Bo Ik Li/Lee. Kim’s great-grandmother Kang Pan-sok was the daughter of Kang Don-uk and Wi Don-sin.

Kim’s paternal grandmother was guerilla Kim Jong-suk (the daughter of Kim Chun San and O Ssi).

Kim’s maternal grandfather was named Ko Gyon-tek. Ko was born in Jochon-eup, Jeju. He worked in an Osaka sewing factory.

Kim’s maternal grandmother was named Lee Maeng-in.
