His father, John V. Buckland, is English. His mother, Carolyn Joy, is Welsh, from Caerleon, Newport. He was raised mostly in Pantymwyn, near Mold, Flintshire, Wales.

Jonny is married to jewelry designer Chloe Lee Evans, with whom he has two children.
