John Sherman was an American politician. A Republican, he served as a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Ohio, from March 4, 1855 to March 21, 1861, a U.S. Senator from Ohio, from March 21, 1861 to March 8, 1877, and again from March 4, 1881 to March 4, 1897, U.S. Secretary of the Treasury, from March 10, 1877 to March 3, 1881, President pro tempore of the U.S. Senate, from December 7, 1885 to February 26, 1887, and U.S. Secretary of State, from March 6, 1897 to April 27, 1898.

He was a candidate for the Republican Party’s nomination for President of the United States in 1880, 1884, and 1888.

John was the son of Mary (Hoyt) and Charles Robert Sherman, a lawyer and public servant, who was an Ohio Supreme Court judge, from 1823 to 1829. His recent ancestors had all been from Connecticut. Among John’s siblings were soldier, businessman, educator, and author William Tecumseh Sherman, lawyer and judge Charles Taylor Sherman, and banker Hoyt Sherman.

John was married to Margaret Sarah Cecilia Stewart, with whom he had a daughter.

John’s paternal grandfather was Taylor Sherman (the son of Daniel Sherman and Mindwell Taylor). Taylor was born in Connecticut, and was a member of the Connecticut House of Representatives. Daniel was a judge and state legislator in Connecticut, and was the son of John Sherman and Emma Preston. Mindwell was the daughter of Nathan Taylor and Hannah Benedict.

John’s paternal grandmother was Elizabeth Stoddard (the daughter of Israel Stoddard and Elizabeth Reed/Reade). John’s grandmother Elizabeth was born in Connecticut. Israel was the son of Eliakim Stoddard and Joanna Curtiss/Curtis.

John’s maternal grandfather was Isaac Hoyt (the son of James Hoyt and Hannah Gould/Goold). Isaac was born in Connecticut. James was the son of Joseph Hoyt and Sarah Pickett.

John’s maternal grandmother was Mary Raymond (the daughter of Eliakim Raymond and Hannah Street). Mary was born in Connecticut. Eliakim was the son of Samuel Raymond and Elizabeth Hoyt. Hannah was the daughter of Nathaniel Street and Mary Raymond.
