John’s paternal grandmother was Grace Rebecca Spinoza (the daughter of Joseph Judah Benjamin Spinoza and Minnie Tuschinsky). Grace was born in Massachusetts. Joseph was born in Massachusetts, the son of Benjamin Spinosa, a Jewish emigrant from Amsterdam, Netherlands, and of Rebecca Nelson, a Jewish emigrant from Hull, England. Minnie was a Polish Jewish immigrant. John’s great-great-grandfather Benjamin was a Sephardi Jew, with Jewish ancestors who had lived in Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, and Morocco, before the Netherlands. He was said to be related to Dutch Jewish philosopher Baruch Spinoza.
