Makonnen is the son of Sabrina Tate and Errol Sheran. His father is Belizean, and his mother is African-American. His paternal grandparents emigrated to the U.S. from Belize when it was British Honduras, a British colony. One of his grandmothers was an opera singer.

Makonnen was raised mostly in South Los Angeles, by his father, and spent part of his childhood in Atlanta, Georgia, with his mother. A photo of Makonnen with his mother can be seen here.

Makonnen has described his ethnicity as “African-American, Indian, Irish, Belgian, German, Chinese.” His birth name Sheran can be South Asian, and there is a sizable South Asian community in Belize. It is not clear if Makonnen’s Irish, Belgian, or Chinese ancestry can be verified/documented.

Makonnen’s paternal grandfather was Lester Dalton Sheran/Beeks (the son of Owen Sheran and Primilina Dafne Alcionie Beeks).

Makonnen’s paternal grandmother was named Daphne Therese Heusner (the daughter of Florence Albertha Humes). Daphne’s father likely was Karl Heusner, who emigrated to Belize from Germany. Florence was Belizean.
