Ida Lupino was an English and American actress, singer, director, writer, and producer. An early female director, she directed seven films, the film noir The Hitch-Hiker, as well as Not Wanted, Never Fear, Outrage, Hard, Fast and Beautiful, The Bigamist, and The Trouble with Angels, and works on television. Her acting roles included the films The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, They Drive by Night, High Sierra, Moontide, Deep Valley, Road House, and While the City Sleeps. She also co-wrote and co-produced films.

She was the daughter of actress Connie O’Shea (born Constance Gladys O’Shea), also known as Connie Emerald, and music hall comedian Stanley Lupino. She came from a prominent family of entertainers. Her great-grandfather, born George Hook, changed his name to George Lupino or George Hook Lupino, after working with members of the Lupino family of dancers, acrobats, and puppet makers. The original Lupinos were Italians who came to England in the 1600s.

Her uncle was comedian, actor, and Pantomime dame Barry Lupino. Her great-uncle was animal impersonator Arthur Lupino, who played Nana in Peter Pan. Ida’s first cousins, once removed, were actor and theatre manager Lupino Lane (born Henry William George Lupino) and actor Wallace Lupino.

Her sister was actress and dancer Rita Lupino. She had a daughter with her former husband, actor Howard Duff. Ida became a U.S. citizen in 1948.

Ida’s paternal grandfather was George Lupino (the son of George Hook Lupino/George Hook and Rosina Sophia Proctor). Ida’s grandfather George performed with the Drury Lane pantomimes. Ida’s great-grandfather George Hook Lupino was a dancer, who was famous in the role of Harlequin.

Ida’s paternal grandmother was named Florence Annie Webster. Florence was born in London, England.
