Ian Nepomniachtchi is a Russian chess grandmaster. He has won the 2010 and the 2020 Russian Superfinal, the 2010 European Individual titles, the 2016 Tal Memorial, the 2008 and 2015 Aeroflot Open events, and, with the Russian team, the World Team Chess Championship in 2013 and 2019, and the 2015 European Team Chess Championship. He is nicknamed “Nepo.”

Ian’s paternal grandfather was Boris Iosifovich Nepomniashchy. Boris was a famous teacher and lyricist, and was born in Klintsy, Bryansk Oblast. Ian was raised partly in Bryansk.
