Iain Duncan Smith, also known as IDS, is a British politician. He has been Member of Parliament for Chingford and Woodford Green, since 9 April, 1992. He was Leader of the Conservative Party and Leader of the Opposition, both from 13 September, 2001 to 6 November, 2003, and Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, from 12 May, 2010 to 18 March, 2016. He has also been Chairman of the Social Justice Policy Group, since 12 September, 2016, a position he previously held from 7 December, 2005 to 12 May, 2010.
Iain is the son of Pamela Mary (Summers), a ballerina, and W. G. G. Duncan Smith (Wilfrid George Gerald Duncan Smith), a Royal Air Force flying ace of World War II. His father was born in Madras, India, and had Scottish and English ancestry. His mother was born in Nanjing, China, and had English, one fourth Japanese, and some Irish, ancestry.
Iain is married to Elizabeth “Betsy” Fremantle, with whom he has four children. Betsy’s father was John Fremantle, 5th Baron Cottesloe.
Iain’s paternal grandparents were named Wilfred Arthur Smith and Anna Cecilia Duncan. Iain is descended from Adam Duncan, a Scottish admiral in the British navy.
