Ed Koch was an American politician, lawyer, political commentator, film critic, and television personality. A member of the Democratic Party, he served as Mayor of New York City, from January 1, 1978 to December 31, 1989. He was also a Member of the New York City Council, from January 1, 1967 to January 3, 1969, and a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from New York, from January 3, 1969 to December 31, 1977.

He was the son of Yetta/Joyce (Silpe) and Louis/Leib Koch, who worked at a theatre. His parents were Polish Jewish immigrants, with roots in Kozliv, and Uścieczko, Eastern Galicia. He was raised in Conservative Judaism. He grew up partly in Newark, New Jersey. Ed was a decorated WWII veteran.

Ed’s paternal grandfather was named Jüda Isak Koch (the son of Joel Koch).

Ed’s paternal grandmother was Clara Edelstein (the daughter of Israel Edelstein and Minnie Cohen).

    Just my observation, if his paternal ancestors were Polish Jews, why did he have a German surname?
