Claudia Sheinbaum is a Mexican politician, scientist, and academic. She has served as Mayor of Tlalpan, from 1 October, 2015 to 6 December, 2017, and Head of Government of Mexico City, from 5 December, 2018 to 16 June, 2023. She was also Secretary of the Environment of the Federal District, from 5 December, 2000 to 15 May, 2006. She has authored over 100 articles and two books, on energy, the environment, and sustainable development, and similar themes. She retired from her mayoral position to run for president in the 2024 election, receiving Morena’s nomination.

Claudia is the daughter of Annie Pardo Cemo, a biologist and professor emeritus, and Carlos Sheinbaum Yoselevitz, a chemical engineer. Her brother is a physicist. Her paternal grandparents were Ashkenazi Jews from Lithuania, who moved to Mexico in the 1920s, and her maternal grandparents were Sephardi Jews from Bulgaria, who moved there in the 1940s during the Holocaust.

She has a daughter with her former husband, politician Carlos Ímaz Gispert.

Claudia’s paternal grandfather was named Chone/Juan Scheinbaum/Sheinbaum Abramovitz (the son of José Scheinbaum/Sheinbaum and Juana Marsha). Juan was born in Shestakovo, Lithuania.

Claudia’s paternal grandmother was Emma Yoselevitz Bruk (born Emma Yoselevitz, the daughter of Samuel Yoselevitz and Jaya Bruk/Bruck). Emma was born in Kaunas County, Lithuania. Samuel was the son of Volf Yoselevitz and Rebeca. Jaya was the daughter of Luis/Leyba Bruk/Bruck and Rebeca/Beile Dvora Lyubitz.

Claudia’s maternal grandfather’s surname was Pardo. He was from Sofia, Bulgaria.

Claudia’s maternal grandmother’s surname was Cemo.
