Brett Kavanaugh is an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, having been confirmed on October 6, 2018. He was previously White House Staff Secretary, from June 6, 2003 to May 30, 2006, and a Judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, from May 30, 2006 to October 6, 2018.
Justice Kavanaugh is the son of Martha Gamble (Murphy) and Everett Edward Kavanaugh, Jr. His father is a trade association executive and lawyer, who was a long-time president of the Cosmetic, Toiletry and Fragrance Association. His mother was a high school teacher, and Maryland state Circuit Court Judge, from 1995 to 2001. He was raised partly in Bethesda, Maryland.
Justice Kavanaugh is married to Ashley Estes Kavanaugh, who was Personal Secretary to the President, from 2001 to 2005. The couple has two children.
Justice Kavanaugh is a Roman Catholic.
