Boris Yeltsin was a Russian politician. He was the first President of Russia, from 25 December, 1991 to 31 December, 1999. He was previously First Secretary of the Moscow City Committee of the Communist Party, from 23 December, 1985 to 11 November, 1987, Chairman of the Supreme Soviet of the Russian SFSR, from 29 May, 1990 to 10 July, 1991, and President of the Russian SFSR, from 10 July, 1991 to 25 December, 1991.
Boris was the son of Klavdiya/Klaudia Vasilyevna Starygina, who worked at a garment factory, and Nikolai Ignatevich Yeltsin, a potash combine worker. He was married to Naina Yeltsina (born Anastasia Iosifovna Girina), with whom he had two children, including Tatyana Yumasheva, who was Adviser to the President of Russia, from 28 June, 1997 to 3 January, 2000.
Boris’s paternal grandfather was Ignatii/Ignat Yekimovich Yeltsin (the son of Yekim Savich Yeltsin and Catherine Yemelyanova). Ignat was born in Basmanovo, Temkinskiy rayon, Smolenskaya oblast’, Russia, and was a farmer. Yekim was the son of Savva Ivanov Yeltsin.
Boris’s paternal grandmother was named Anna Dmitriyevna. Anna was born in Basmanovo.
Boris’s maternal grandfather was named Vasily Starygin.
Some sources state that Boris’s grandmother was Mansi. It is not clear if this Mansi ancestry has been verified/documented.
