Mikhail Gorbachev was the eighth and last leader of the Soviet Union. He served as General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, from 11 March, 1985 to 24 August, 1991, when the party was dissolved. He was also Acting Second Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, from 9 February, 1984 to 10 March, 1985, Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union, from 1 October, 1988 to 25 May, 1989, Chairman of the Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union, from 25 May, 1989 to 15 March, 1990, President of the Soviet Union, from 15 March, 1990 to 25 December, 1991; and, later, Co-Chairman of the Union of Social Democrats, from 11 March, 2000 to 15 November, 2017.
He was Time Magazine’s Person of the Year for 1987 and 1989. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1990.
He was the son of Maria Panteleyevna (Gopkalo) and Sergey Andreyevich Gorbachev. His father was a combine harvester operator and WWII veteran. His mother was a kolkhoz worker, from Chernihiv, northern Ukraine. His parents were peasants. Mikhail was married to activist and philanthropist Raisa Gorbacheva (born Raisa Maximovna Titarenko), until her death. The couple had a daughter.
Mikhail’s paternal grandfather was named Andrey Moiseyevich Gorbachev (the son of Moisey Andreyevich Gorbachev and Stepanida). Moisey was the son of Andrey Gorbachev. The Gorbachev family had roots in Voronezh.
Mikhail’s paternal grandmother was named Arina Mironovna Artyushenko.
Mikhail’s maternal grandfather was named Panteley/Pantelei Yefimovich Gopkalo (the son of Yefim Gopkalo). Panteley was born in Chernihiv.
Mikhail’s maternal grandmother was named Vasilisa Lukyanovna Litovchenko (the daughter of Lukyan Litovchenko).
