Bharrat Jagdeo is a Guyanese politician. He served as President of Guyana, from 11 August, 1999 to 3 December, 2011. He has also been Vice President of Guyana, since 2 August, 2020, and, previously, from 19 December, 1997 to 9 August, 1999; as well as, Minister of Finance, from 1995 to 1999, Prime Minister and First Vice President of Guyana, from 9 August, 1999 to 11 August, 1999, and President pro tempore of the Union of South American Nations, from 26 November, 2010 to 29 October, 2011. He has held global leadership positions in green growth and development, and climate change.

His parents were Hindu Indian immigrants. He is married to Natasha Jagdeo.

Bharrat’s grandfather was named Ram Jiyawan. Ram was from Pure Thakurain, Amethi district, Awadh region, now Uttar Pradesh, India. He moved to British Guiana in 1912, under the Indian indenture system.

    Change his ethnicity to ” Indian-Guyanese [Awadhi, Punjabi, other]. Jagdeo is a Punjabi name. Add the tags Punjabi and Awadhi.
