Aaron Altaras is a German actor.
He is the son of Adriana Altaras, an actress, theatre director, and writer, and Wolfgang Böhmer, a composer. His brother is actor Leonard Altaras.
His father is German, and was raised Catholic. His mother was born in Zagreb, Croatia, to an Ashkenazi Jewish mother and a Sephardi Jewish father. Both of Aaron’s maternal grandparents were Holocaust survivors who fought in the resistance.
Aaron attended a Jewish school.
Aaron’s maternal grandfather was Jakob/Jakov/Jakica Altaras (the son of Leon Altaras and Regina Altaras). Jakob was born in Split, Kingdom of Dalmatia, in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, now Croatia, and was Sephardi Jewish. He was a physician, and the president of the Jewish community in Giessen. He was part of the partisan resistance movement in Croatia during World War II. Aaron’s great-grandfather Leon was born in Novi Pazar, Raška District, Serbia, the son of Avram Altarac, who was born in Sarajevo, and of Hana/Nada Papo, who was born in Banja Luka. Aaron’s great-grandmother Regina was born in Travnik, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the daughter of Menahem/Mento Altarac, who was born in Sarajevo, and of Sara Elazar.
Aaron’s maternal grandmother was Thea Altaras (born Thea Fuhrmann, the daughter of Sigismund/Žiga Fuhrmann and Hermine/Alma Lausch). Thea was born in Zagreb, Kingdom of Yugoslavia, now Croatia, and was a prominent architect. She was Ashkenazi Jewish, and was known for her work on Jewish monuments in Hesse, Germany. During World War II, she was imprisoned at the Rab concentration camp with her mother and sister. After Italy was capitulated, Thea joined the resistance. Aaron’s great-grandfather Sigismund was born in Bonyhád, Hungary, the son of Samuel Fuhrmann, who was born in Plavna, South Backa District, Vojvodina, Serbia, and of Johanna Schwarz, who was born in Bonyhádi, Tolnau, Hungary. Aaron’s great-grandmother Hermine was born in Veliki Bukovec, Varaždinska županija, Croatia, the daughter of Adam Lausch, who was born in Hungary, and of Rosa Lowe Kastl, who was born in Čakovec, Međimurje County, Croatia.
