Alela’s great-grandfather Albert was the son Otto Menig, whose father was from Berlin, Germany, or from Switzerland, and of Anna Hartfield, who was German. Thelma was the daughter of William J. Franke and Edith Ranye/Ranje, both children of German immigrants.
