Gustavo “Guga” Kuerten is a Brazilian professional tennis player. He was a world No. 1, won the French Open singles title three times (1997, 2000, and 2001), and was the Tennis Masters Cup champion in 2000.

My mother is Alice Thümmel Kuerten and my father is Aldo Amadeu Kuerten, both of German origin, with some Polish and Austrian influences.

Gustavo is married to Mariana Soncini, with whom he has two children.

Gustavo’s paternal grandfather was Frederico Kuerten (the son of Augusto Frederico Kuerten and Gertrudes Wernke/Weirneke). Gustavo’s grandfather Frederico was born in Santa Catarina, to parents who were also born there. Through this line, Gustavo is a third cousin of model and television presenter Renata Kuerten. Gustavo’s paternal great-great-grandfather Friedrich “Frederico” Kuerten/Kürten, born c. 1854, in Germany, was also Renata’s paternal great-great-grandfather. Friedrich had children with two German women: Maria Anna Schierhoff (born c. 1854) and Maria Franziska Lembeck (born c. 1860). Sources differ as to which was Gustavo’s great-great-grandmother.

Gustavo’s paternal grandmother was Clara Gesing (the daughter of Hermann “Germano” Gesing and Ana Füchter). Clara was born in Santa Catarina, to German parents. Hermann was the son of Bernhard Gesing and Theresia Locks. Ana was the daughter of Heinrich Füchter and Elisabeth Holscher.

Gustavo’s maternal grandfather was named Walter Thümmel.

Gustavo’s maternal grandmother was Olga Schlösser/Schloesser (the daughter of Adolf Schlösser and Maria Gertrudes Klapot/Klappoth). Olga was born in Santa Catarina. Adolf was born in Zgierz, Poland, to Polish-born parents, Gustav Schlösser and Nathalia/Nathalie/Natalie Starnell. The Schlösser family were ethnic Germans, originally from Rothenburg, Silesia. Maria Gertrudes was born in Santa Catarina, the daughter of Friedrich Wilhelm August Klappoth, who was German, and of Anna Scheurich, whose parents were also German.

    His paternal grandparents were Frederico Kuerten (the son of Augusto Kuerten and Gertrudes Wernke) and Clara Gesing.

    He has stated in an interview:

    “My mother is Alice Thümmel Kuerten and my father is Aldo Amadeu Kuerten, both of German origin, with some Polish and Austrian influences”.
