Duane Chapman is an American reality television star, bounty hunter, and bail bondsman. He is also known as Dog Chapman or Dog, and has starred on the reality television programs Dog the Bounty Hunter, Dog and Beth: On the Hunt, and Dog’s Most Wanted. Beginning in 1976, he served eighteen months in a Texas prison for third degree murder.

Duane is the son of Barbara Darlene (Cowell), an Assemblies of God minister, and Wesley Duane Chapman. Duane has German, English, Danish, and distant Swiss-German, ancestry. Duane is married to Francie Frane. He was previously married to Alice Elizabeth “Beth” Barmore, until her death. Duane and Beth opened appeared together in his programs. He has twelve children, a son with Debbie White; two, including bail bondsman and bounty hunter Leland Chapman, with his first wife La Fonda Honeycutt; three with his second wife Ann Tegnell; three, including businessperson, television personality, bail bondswoman, and bounty hunter Lyssa Chapman, with his third wife Lyssa Rael; and three with Beth.

Duane has said that he has Native American heritage. No Native American ancestry appears in the genealogy of Duane Chapman. There is also a comic article that states that Duane has Polish and Ukrainian ancestry. This article was intended as a joke, and is not factually accurate.

Duane’s paternal grandfather was Orlie Emmerson/Emerson Chapman (the son of Richard Franklin Chapman and Elsie May Gatrost). Orlie was born in Iowa. Richard was born in Iowa, the son of John Chapman, who was from West Lavington, Wiltshire, England, and of Martha Isabella Wilson. Elsie was the daughter of Michael Elmer Gatrost, who was of German, and some Swiss-German, descent, and of Anna/Annie Em Maria Carlile/Carlisle, who was born in Mission, Nottinghamshire, England.

Duane’s paternal grandmother was Lenora A. Folkers (the daughter of Berndt/Bernt “Ben” Folkers/Folkerts and Elizabeth Kieselhorst). Lenora was born in Nebraska. Berndt was German, the son of Fritz Frank Folkertz/Folkers, from Sandhorst, Hanover, and of Anna/Annie Miller. Duane’s maternal grandfather was Leland Clyde Cowell (the son of Clyde Leland Cowell and Anna/Anne Christine Heddeman/Hedeman). Duane’s grandfather Leland was born in Colorado. Clyde was the son of John William Cowell and Jennie Lillian Wormell. Anna was born in Colorado, the daughter of Danish parents, Samuel Heddeman/Hedeman and Ella.

Duane’s maternal grandmother was Pauline Ellen Stone (the daughter of Ernest Lytton Stone and Nellie Leota Courter). Pauline was born in Colorado.
