William McMahon was an Australian politician. A member of the Liberal Party, he served as Prime Minister of Australia, from 10 March, 1971 to 5 December, 1972. He was also Deputy Leader of the Liberal Party, from 26 January, 1966 to 10 March, 1971, Treasurer of Australia, from 26 November, 1966 to 25 October, 1969, Minister for Foreign Affairs, from 12 November, 1969 to 22 March, 1971, Leader of the Liberal Party, from 22 March, 1971 to 20 December, 1972, Leader of the Opposition, from 5 December, 1972 to 20 December, 1972, Father of the House of Representatives, from 11 November, 1977 to 4 January, 1982, and Father of the Parliament, from 1 July, 1981 to 4 January, 1982, among other duties.

Prime Minister McMahon was the son of Mary Ellen Amelia (Walder) and William Daniel McMahon, a lawyer. His uncle was Samuel Walder (Samuel Robert Walder), who was Lord Mayor of Sydney, from 1 January, 1932 to 31 December, 1932, and a member of the New South Wales Legislative Council.

Prime Minister McMahon was married to Sonia McMahon (born Sonia Rachel Hopkins), a philanthropist and socialite, until his death. The couple had three children, including actor and model Julian McMahon.

Prime Minister McMahon’s father was of Irish descent. Prime Minister McMahon’s mother was of three quarters English and one quarter Irish ancestry.

Prime Minister McMahon’s paternal grandfather was James McMahon (the son of John McMahon and Ellen Byrnes). James was born in County Clare, Ireland. John was the son of William McMahon and Elizabeth. Ellen was the daughter of Michael Byrnes and Bridget.

Prime Minister McMahon’s paternal grandmother was Mary Coyle (the daughter of Thomas Coyle and Margaret). Mary was born in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland. Thomas was the son of Patrick Coyle and Catherine.

Prime Minister McMahon’s maternal grandfather was Samuel Walder (the son of William Robert Walder and Jane Bevan Spitty). Samuel was born in Sydney, Australia, to English parents. William was the son of Thomas Walder and Elizabeth. Jane was the daughter of William Spitty and Jane Bevan.

Prime Minister McMahon’s maternal grandmother was Mary Ann Hatton (the daughter of Thomas Hatton and Catherine Burns). Thomas was English, the son of John Hatton. Catherine was Irish.
